Driver Certification

Wyoming CDL holders are required to submit to WYDOT – Driver Services a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate to obtain a "certified" status as part of their driving record.  CDL holders are required to have this status. Those who do not provide and keep a current medical certificate on file with us will become "not-certified," and their CDL is subject to be downgraded to a non-commercial driver license.

Any Wyoming CDL driver that is required to hold a medical certificate must be examined by a medical professional listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.  The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners lists medical examiners (MEs) who have been trained, tested, and certified to perform medical examinations for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers in interstate commerce.  Drivers can search for a Nationally Registered ME by visiting the FMCSA National Registry website.

Additionally, DOT medical certificates must be on the approved FMCSA form.  Only 2 minor alterations may be made to the MEC, Form MCSA-5876:

1. It may be reduced in size, as long as all the content is legible, and
2. It may be printed in black and white.

Example of the approved Form MCSA-5876 can be found here.

Commercial Driver License holders are required to certify to a single type of commercial operation, and must provide information to their licensing state regarding the type of commercial motor vehicle operation they drive in or expect to drive in with their CDL. When a driver applies for a CDL, renews a CDL, applies for a higher class of CDL, applies for a new endorsement on a CDL, or transfers a CDL from another state; the holder is required to certify to this on their credential application.

If you still need to change your certification with Driver Services, you may pick up a Commercial Driver License Certification form from your local driver exam station, or download one from the Forms page.  For help in determining which type of commercial motor vehicle operation you drive in or expect to drive with your CDL use the chart below or can be found here.

(Note for EI & EA status: A generic letter for government agencies is available on the forms page.)
