Wintry conditions expected in Wyoming this weekend

February 17, 2018

Motorists may experience wintry conditions this weekend and into Presidents’ Day as arctic air and snow move through the state.

Windy conditions will continue in central and southern Wyoming through Saturday night. Interstate 80 was open, however parts were closed at times Saturday to light, high profile vehicles because of extreme blow over risk.

An arctic front will bring snow and ice to I-90 and I-25 by Sunday night, DayWeather reported.  Travelers may experience snow and icy conditions on I-25 and I-80 Sunday night through Monday. Frigid temperatures will move into the state Sunday through Tuesday, resulting in severe wind chills.

Motorists heading out should check the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s 511 website for the latest road and travel information.

Motorists can also sign up for 511 Notify to receive vital travel messages by text or email.

When driving during wintry conditions, motorists should take extra precautions. See the below video for winter driving preparedness. Motorists should always:
•    buckle up
•    check their tires before heading out
•    turn off cruise control
•    accelerate and decelerate slowly
•    increase following distance
•    carry an emergency kit
•    keep their gas tanks at least half full

Motorists also should let people know their destinations and leave extra early. If a motorist gets into an accident, they should call 911 from their cell phones and remain in their vehicles.

WYDOT also wants to remind motorists to be cautious when driving near snowplows. Plows create a large cloud of snow, making it difficult to see and safely pass the snow removal equipment.
