Wyoming under winter storm warnings and advisories Sunday

February 18, 2018

Motorists traveling in Wyoming may encounter wintry conditions in several parts of the state.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for the northern and western parts of the state as wintry conditions are developing in those areas Sunday morning.

A high wind warning remains in effect along I-25 and parts of I-80 in the southern and eastern parts of the state.

An arctic front will bring snow and ice to I-90 and I-25 by Sunday night, DayWeather reported.  Travelers may experience snow and icy conditions on I-25 and I-80 Sunday night through Monday. Frigid temperatures will move into the state Sunday through Tuesday, resulting in severe wind chills.

Travelers heading out should check the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s 511 website for the latest road and travel information.

Travelers can also sign up for 511 Notify to receive vital travel messages by text or email.

When driving during wintry conditions, motorists should take extra precautions. Motorists should always:

  • buckle up
  • check their tires before heading out
  • turn off cruise control
  • accelerate and decelerate slowly
  • increase following distance
  • carry an emergency kit
  • keep their gas tanks at least half full

Motorists also should let people know their destinations and leave extra early. If a motorist gets into an accident, they should call 911 from their cell phones and remain in their vehicles.

WYDOT also wants to remind motorists to be cautious when driving near snowplows. Plows create a large cloud of snow, making it difficult to see and safely pass the snow removal equipment.
