Hoback Canyon closed for avalanche cleanup

April 9, 2019

UPDATE:   US189: Daniel Jct - Jackson: Open to all traffic BOTH DIRECTIONS. 09-APR 13:43

JACKSON, Wyo. – The Wyoming Department of Transportation avalanche and maintenance crews were out conducting avalanche control at the Cow and Calf of the Wood slide paths at roughly 8 a.m. this morning. The work was successful, bringing down roughly 20 feet of snow across US 189/191.

“We brought down quite a bit of snow, so it’s going to be a while before we can get this cleaned up,” WYDOT maintenance foreman Bruce Daigle said.

The closure is estimated to last roughly 3-4 hours. The controlled slide that came down this morning follows several natural slides late last week.

“The recent rain we have seen has loosened all that snow pack up,” Daigle added.

WYDOT's avalanche team will continue to monitor the Hoback Canyon, Snake River Canyon and Teton Pass closely and is asking the public to be prepared for possible closures.
