I-80 from Rock Springs to Rawlins remains closed overnight

February 14, 2019

I-804.jpgInterstate 80 from Rock Springs to Rawlins remains closed overnight due to high winds, snowdrifts and forecast winter weather.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, I-80 remains closed in both directions from Rock Springs to Rawlins. In addition, I-80 is now closed eastbound from Evanston to Rock Springs and westbound from Cheyenne to Rawlins due to parking and lodging being at capacity in Rawlins, Rock Springs and Laramie.  The estimated opening time for all of I-80 is now late morning on Friday Feb. 15, weather permitting.

Although WYDOT continues to plow the road and pull resources from other areas, travelers should prepare for the extended closure or find an alternate route.

In western Carbon and eastern Sweetwater counties, high winds from the south continue to blow snow from previous storms onto the eastbound lanes of I-80. Maintenance personnel have reported drifts reaching 5 feet deep, in certain areas. Crews are struggling to keep up with blowing conditions and snow removal efforts are being thwarted by excessive wind and drifting.

More equipment and personnel are being shifted to problem areas along I-80 near Rawlins.
