Multiple crashes occur in whiteout on I-90

January 8, 2015

Strong winds and falling snow created whiteout conditions Thursday on Interstate 90 about 11 miles south of Sheridan, where crashes occurred involving approximately 23 vehicles, including five tractor-trailer rigs.

No fatalities were reported, but one serious injury and several minor injuries resulted. The crashes closed I-90 beginning at approximately 11:48 a.m. The highway remained closed northbound for more than five hours while crews removed the wreckage. Reopening of the southbound lanes took more than seven hours because fuel had to be removed from a tanker involved in the crash before the truck could be moved from the highway

In addition to the collisions, Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers reported several dozen other vehicles slid off the road due to the conditions or while avoiding crashes in the roadway.

Drivers are encouraged to dial 511 or go to www.wyoroad.info for information on road and weather conditions they will encounter in their travels.
