Superload to move through downtown Laramie, other Wyo. roads

July 7, 2017

LARAMIE, Wyo. – A “superload” is scheduled to move through Laramie and across several Wyoming counties on Sunday morning, July 9.

The superload, which contains a compressor generator building, is 18 feet wide, 22 feet high, 140 feet long and weighs in at around 400,000 lbs.

“It looks like a backyard shed on steroids,” said Gregory Cross, the heavy haul supervisor with Barnhart Crane, the company moving the superload.

The superload will arrive at the port of entry south of Laramie on Saturday and will leave the port around 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 9.

Because the load is too high to go under the Interstate 80 bridge over US 287, it will proceed on Interstate 80 eastbound, perform a U-turn in the interstate and then exit back onto US 287.

The load will go north on US 287 through downtown Laramie and continue to WYO 487 north.

The load will then use WYO 220 south, US 287 north, a county road from Jeffrey City to Wamsutter and then I-80 westbound.

On Monday, the load will continue west along I-80, perform a U-turn at milepost 120 and return to Exit 130. From there, it will continue west on the I-80 frontage road to Middle Baxter Road and then WYO 430 to Bitter Creek Road and its final destination.

Drivers should be aware of the superload and its route and should note that the length of the superload may make it difficult to safely pass the vehicle on two-lane roads.

In Laramie, traffic signals will be temporarily moved as needed to accommodate the vehicle.

Traffic on I-80 will also be stopped temporarily as the superload completes its U-turn.
