Transportation commission awards $14 million in contracts

October 8, 2012
Contracts totaling nearly $14 million for nine highway projects around the state were awarded by the Wyoming Transportation Commission during a teleconference meeting Thursday.

A deteriorating 3.4-mile section of WYO 270 about four miles north of Manville will be reconstructed and widened under a $5.5 million contract won by Lander’s High Country Construction. The highway’s existing 2-foot safety shoulders will be widened to 4 feet and the rebuilt road will get a final chip seal before the contract completion date of Aug. 31, 2014.

Cheyenne’s Knife River submitted the low bid of $3.1 to build a road providing access to the new Jonathon Quarry east of US 30 about eight miles north of Laramie. The four-mile road is being funded through the Industrial Road Program, a state-funded program that allows WYDOT to help counties with economic development efforts. The project also will include adding acceleration and deceleration lanes on US 30 for traffic entering or leaving the new road. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2013.

HK Contractors of Idaho Falls submitted the low bid of $1.4 million to mill off deteriorating pavement on four miles of WYO 89 between Sage Junction and the Utah border and replace it with a new layer of pavement. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2013.

Cheyenne’s American Contracting submitted the low bid of $1.4 million for erosion repairs to US 14A over the Yellowtail Reservoir Causeway about 19 miles east of Lovell. High water got to within a foot of the road in 2011, washing away some of the highway’s shoulder. The affected shoulders will be rebuilt, rock added to protect it against future erosion and new guardrail installed along the entire two-mile causeway. Much of the work must be completed while water levels are low and before runoff begins next spring. The contract completion date is Aug. 31.

Oftedal Construction of Miles City, Mont., won an $831,000 contract for slide mitigation work along US 16 about 27 miles southwest of Buffalo. The work will include drilling 40 horizontal holes in a fan configuration under the highway and inserting perforated pipes to drain water from the area. Lowering the water level under the road will reduce the rising and falling of the pavement during freeze-thaw cycles. The contract completion date is July 31.

Cheyenne’s Reiman Corp. submitted the low bid of $642,000 to replace the Uinta County Road 221 bridge over the Blacks Fork River by Oct. 31, 2013. Reiman also will complete slide repairs on Lower Nowood Road (Washakie County Road 47) under a $301,000 contract that carries an Aug. 31 completion date.

Casper’s Modern Electric Co. won a $472,000 contract for installing five electronic message signs and a road weather information system at locations on Wyoming Boulevard (WYO 258) and CY Avenue (WYO 220) in Casper. The contract completion date is Sept. 30.

S&L Industrial of Cowley was awarded a $258,000 contract for installing signs along I-25 in Converse, Natrona and Platte counties by Oct. 31, 2013.
