Deteriorating weather conditions caused an avalanche to come down on US 26/89/189/191 south of Jackson near High School Road.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation sent a text notification at about 12:21 p.m. alerting subscribers of the incident. The slide pushed its way over two lanes of traffic and struck a vehicle in its path. The driver of the vehicle did not sustain any serious injury.
A single lane of traffic in each direction was maintained on the 5-lane stretch of highway until WYDOT crews will able to clear the debris. The highway opened all lanes of travel around 1:30 p.m.
“We have been watching the weather and doing our best to prepare and plan ahead, but nature can be unpredictable,” WYDOT Jackson Foreman Bruce Daigle said.
All state highways in Teton County are currently under a “No Unnecessary Travel” advisory until further notice. In addition, WYDOT has scheduled a closure of WYO 22 Teton Pass for tonight, Wednesday February 13, 2019 at 10 p.m. for avalanche mitigation. Reduced visibility, winter driving conditions, and increasing avalanche hazard may force an earlier closure.
“There is a potential for more avalanches around the valley and so that is why we put out the No Unnecessary Travel advisory,” Daigle said.
Significant winter weather is currently impacting the region. As such, local residents and travelers should expect potential road closures and snow bank slide-offs, as well as extended closures over the next 24-48 hours.
WYDOT is encouraging residents and commuters to plan ahead today and tomorrow, especially if your travel plans take you over Teton Pass. To receive updates on the situation, sign up for 511 alerts.
