I-80 Green River Tunnel crash quick facts
This media kit includes information on the Feb. 14, 2025 crash at mile marker 90.2 westbound on Interstate 80, within the Green River Tunnel.
Three fatalities are confirmed.
There are two tunnels, eastbound and westbound, that are roughly 1,200 feet long each, with two lanes in each direction. Normal lane widths in the tunnel are 12 ft. The tunnels opened in 1966.
WYDOT engineers are confident in the structural integrity of the eastbound tunnel and its ability to carry traffic again once the westbound crash scene is cleared. The area is geologically sound, with no risk of catastrophic collapse in either tunnel. There is damage to the 1 ft 3 inch reinforced concrete liner and electrical lighting system within the tunnel.
As of Feb. 16: WHP has cleared about half of the vehicles involved in the tunnel fire. Last night, four passenger vehicles and nine commercial vehicles were removed from the crash site. In total, WHP believes 26 vehicles were involved in the event: 10 passenger vehicles and 16 commercial vehicles. Six commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles were completely destroyed by the fire.
The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a parallel investigation of this crash. Questions about the NTSB investigation must be directed here.
