The Transportation Alternatives Incentive Program (TAIP) leverages Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds to implement a comprehensive statewide initiative that enhances bicycle safety, traffic education, and school safety. This program aligns with federal and state transportation goals by promoting sustainable and safer transportation alternatives.

Program Objectives

The program aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Bicycle Safety: Promote the use of helmets, proper signaling, and adherence to traffic laws among cyclists.
• Traffic Education: Increase awareness of pedestrian and cyclist rights and responsibilities through targeted campaigns.
• School Safety: Collaborate with schools to ensure safe travel routes, conduct safety workshops, and establish visible enforcement efforts near educational institutions.

Eligible Activities

WYDOT Local Programs uses these funds to specifically target school-aged children in Wyoming where walking and biking is one of the primary modes of transportation when getting to and from school. This program is able to purchase bike helmets, safety reflectors, and other safety-incentive items. The Local Programs team will set up a time and location to visit your school to give safety presentations to all grades who are interested. Typically these presentations are given to the individual classes and take about 30 minutes each, meaning we are able to impact the entire student body in one day. Please ensure adequate notice is given to WYDOT so that we are able to order the necessary items to hand out to the students. 

Funding Details

The TAIP will use program funds to directly purchase approved items and services on behalf of interested schools. This approach ensures efficient use of resources while alleviating the need for schools to provide matching funds. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.
